Die Anoden konventioneller Lithium-Ionen-Batterien bestehen in der Regel aus Graphit, was die Menge an Lithium, die durch Anoden gespeichert werden kann, in der Praxis begrenzt. Silizium dagegen ist theoretisch das Material mit der höchsten Lithium-Absorptionskapazität, die es gibt, fast zehnmal so viel wie Kohle. Das Problem ist, dass nach einem Paar Lade-/Entladungszyklen die Anode am Ende bricht.
Die Forscher haben gezeigt, dass durch das Hinzufügen von mikroskopischen Poren auf die Oberfläche von Siliziumwafer eine größere Flexibilität und Expansionsfähigkeit dieses Materials erreicht wird. Während konventionelle Batterien in der Lage sind, etwa 300 mAh pro Gramm Kohle in Anoden zu speichern, könnte das auf diese Weise behandelte Silizium bis zu 10 mal so viel speichern.
Nanoporen sind leichter zu erzeugen als Nanoröhren. Die Poren - von einer Breite von 10 bis 50 μm Länge - werden in dem Moment produziert, in dem auf beiden Seiten der Silizium-Schleife positive und negative Belastungen aufgebracht werden. Es sind keine komplexen Vakuumprozesse erforderlich, wie es bei Nanoröhren der Fall ist.
Diese Annäherung scheint die Lebensdauer der Batterien zu verlängern, ein wichtiger Faktor für tragbare elektronische Geräte und Elektroautos.
